God's reputation goes back to the crossing of the Red Sea, 40 years before. It seems like the non-Israelites have more confidence/fear of God's abilities than the Israelites themselves. It is God who leads his people, not Moses or Joshua or anyone else, so the transition to Joshua goes smoothly--God ensures his success through miracles, providence, and angelic intervention.
