God sees the root of Israel's problems in the hearts of the people, particularly the priests. They follow the letter of the law, but very half-heartedly because they must, not because they honor God. It's scary to think what he might say today. Our sacrifices are often just as half-hearted I think-done for show or because we think we ought, rather than out of the depth of love that God has shown us.
