Saul starts well, but he gradually takes on the role of prophet and priest, not just king, going beyond what God has called him to do--inappropriately. Though it seems harsh for God to take away his Spirit, it didn't happen all of a sudden--there were many warning signs. And the role of the king influences everyone in the country.
